Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise was a nurse, who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's model of the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate through art. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood California. When she was in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for broadcast journalism. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury as well as examine their junk. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she decided to move towards the industry of public relations.
